Baba Bulleh Shah's Poetry.

Dedicated to the poetry of 17th century Punjabi, Sufi Saint Baba Bulleh Shah who taught a message of love and harmony between people irrespective of their caste, race, colour, creed or gender.

The aims include preservation of Baba Bulleh Shah's poetry through translation and to introduce it to a new generation of Punjabi speakers who may not be able to read or understand Punjabi. Secondly, to introduce Baba Bulleh Shah's philosophy of peace and harmony to a new western audience.

The focus will be on translation of Baba Bulleh Shah's poetry, together with original Shahmukhi and Gurmukhi texts and transliteration for those unfamiliar with the Punjabi language.

As the Punjabi language has evolved, the meaning of words and descriptions used by baba Bulleh Shah in his poetry are now not always fully understood even by Punjabi speakers. In this website, I will endeavour to explain his poems and their contexts.

Sufi poetry, written in forms of four-line Kafis are based on the Arabic Ode or story-telling, and are meant to be recited or sung aloud. In South Asia, this takes the form of Qawwali, where the Kafi is sung and re-sung to make an impact on the audience, often to the point of rapture. Baba Bulleh Shah's poetry is one of the most popular choices to be performed in this way. It is in fact, so influential that it has been performed by modern pop bands and in Bollywood cinema.

I will include links to some of the best performances of baba Bulleh Shah's work, to show how it was intended to be performed.

Apart from Baba Bulleh Shah's poetry, I also love photographs of nature, especially flowers and have included a section of my own photos for visitors to enjoy.
